NENY Awards $440K to Six Companies Developing Battery and Energy Storage Technology in NY
Binghamton University, Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships – New Energy New York (NENY), led by Binghamton University in partnership with the New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium (NY-BEST), is proud to announce the six inaugural recipients of the NENY Technical Assistance Voucher Program. The program, launched in the fall of 2023, was designed to advance new battery technologies and expand the growing energy storage innovation ecosystem in upstate New York, by supporting startups and small companies in their technology de-risking, scaling, and manufacturing readiness efforts.
“We’re excited to support these six companies as they work towards bringing their innovative solutions to market, further establishing New York State as a leader in the energy storage industry,” said Binghamton University Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships Olga Petrova.
In this highly competitive round, NENY received 33 applications, with the cumulative proposed projects nearing $4 million, showcasing the vibrant innovation and demand within the state’s energy sector. After a rigorous evaluation by a 12-reviewer panel, six outstanding companies have been selected to share close to $500,000 in awards, facilitating their access to essential prototyping, testing, and certification services.
“The overwhelming response and the quality of proposals we received highlight the incredible potential and drive within New York’s energy sector,” said NY-BEST Executive Director William Acker.
Under the Voucher program, the companies can request funding to offset the costs associated with testing, prototyping, certification, and related services from qualified New-York-based providers, including at university centers and for-profit entities. Such services can traditionally be cost-prohibitive to small businesses, hindering the validation and advancement of technological innovations. This program aims to lower barriers to accessing product development services, enhance companies’ capabilities to scale up production and services, and ultimately boost competitiveness in the rapidly expanding battery technology sector.
