Dec. 12, 2024 – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer today announced he has secured up to $500 million in new funding for the Regional Tech Hubs program – which he created in his bipartisan CHIPS & Science Law – as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25), which is slated for floor consideration in the House of Representatives and the Senate in the coming days.
Schumer fought for years to land the prestigious Tech Hubs designation for Upstate NY, which received two coveted designations, one for semiconductor manufacturing and innovation across the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse region and a second for the Binghamton University-led New Energy New York battery hub. Schumer said this new funding will help expand this vital program ensuring it continues to help bring the development of critical technologies back to our shores in the communities that need it most. Agreement with UK campus boosts exchange of battery capabilities

WMG, at The University of Warwick in the U.K., and Binghamton University have entered an agreement to explore collaboration in the fields of science, technology and education with the aim of fueling vital battery manufacturing capability in both countries. The new five-year memorandum of understanding sets the foundation to encourage the sharing of academic, scientific and cultural experiences between the two institutions, both pioneers in the battery field.

The six-month accelerator program is designed to support startups working on battery innovations to help them advance their technology development and their business. Companies accepted into the accelerator will receive $25,000, connections to investors, and opportunities for follow-on investment, including up to $100,000 in vouchers for technical development. SUNY Broome Celebrates First Graduating Class of Lineworker Training Program

The Southern Tier is adding a new component to its rail manufacturing portfolio — hybrid, battery-powered trains.
The Steuben County IDA has been awarded just under $16 million to develop new battery technology for more energy-efficient trains through a partnership with Alstom, Norfolk Southern Railway, and Binghamton University’s New Energy New York consortium.
Two hybrid battery-diesel locomotives will be produced in the Southern Tier and tested at Alstom’s Kanona facility in Bath. Federal funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced Thursday.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced awards for the Fiscal Year 2024 Phase 1 Release 2 of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. Across DOE, 229 projects in 39 states received funding totaling $52 million for a broad range of small businesses.
Companies awarded include ChargeUp company Fermi Energy, Inc, and member companies of the Clean Energy Incubator Program at Koffman Southern Tier Incubator; LiBama Power Corp, New Dominion Enterprises Inc, and Tyfast Energy Corp. The Battery Prototyping Center at Rochester Institute of Technology and the Battery and Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Test and Commercialization Center have merged to become a comprehensive battery development enterprise in New York state.
The university-led merger, which was announced on May 16 during the annual Capture the Energy 2024 Conference and Expo in Albany, N.Y., will be designated the RIT Battery Development Center, in partnership with NY-BEST. It brings together two distinct areas of expertise necessary for battery development and energy storage initiatives—the prototyping, training, and research capabilities based at RIT, and the systems safety and life-cycle testing, certification, and commercialization expertise of the center.

Binghamton University announced that British engineer Paul Malliband was selected to lead Battery-NY. The initiative, which is part of New Energy New York, was designed to establish a strong lithium-ion battery manufacturing infrastructure in upstate New York.

It’s the first Chemung County site for IncubatorWorks, a nonprofit that already supports entrepreneurs and start-up companies in Steuben and Allegany counties in the Southern Tier.

The university also set a record for the value of proposals submitted at $325 million—a 23 percent jump from the previous fiscal year. In September 2023, ARC announced nearly $14 million for 43 projects across 11 Appalachian states. ARC grant of $498,838 to Broome-Tioga Workforce NY in Johnson City, New York, for the Ready for Work project. Ready for Work will be a pilot partnership with Broome County’s legal system to assist individuals recovering from SUD in overcoming justice-related barriers to education, training, and gainful employment.

BU’s New Energy New York project has cleared a major hurdle and advanced to the next round of consideration for up to $160 million in the National Science Foundation’s Regional “Innovation Engines” Competition. The winners will be announced this fall, about a year after Binghamton was awarded nearly $114 million in state and federal grants to turn the region into the nation’s premier hub for lithium battery research, manufacturing and workforce development. Manufacturing Boot Camp Graduates Latest Class
